Special Abilities[edit]

  • Hypnotic Gaze (Su): A moon owl is able to mesmerize an opponent with its gaze. Roll 2d4 and add 4 to determine the total number of Hit Dice of creatures affected. Creatures with the fewest HD are affected first; and, among creatures with equal HD, those who are closest to the moon owl's gaze point of origin are affected first. Hit Dice that are not sufficient to affect a creature are wasted. Affected creatures become fascinated by the effect of the moon owl's gaze. Sightless creatures are not affected.
  • Superior Low-Light Vision (Ex): A moon owl can see five times as far as a pony can in dim light.
  • Skills: Moon owls have a +5 racial bonus on Perception checks; when in flight, moon owls gain a +5 bonus on Stealth checks.

Appearance[edit]

A moon owl resembles a snow owl in that they share the same silvery-white feather color to match the moon's white sheen, except a moon owl's feathers will glow in the moonlight.

Their eye color are often associated with one of the six elements

Moon owls are nocturnal birds of prey, feared for their ability to hunt and attack in near silence. They are intelligent, and though naturally suspicious, sometimes associate with good creatures. A typical moon owl stands about 9 feet tall, has a wingspan of up to 20 feet, and resembles its smaller cousins in nearly every way except size.

Moon owls speak Equine and Griffin.

Behavior[edit]

Known only to hunt during the night of the full moon, witness accounts depict them as frightening but intelligent creatures. Its victims have been found physically unharmed, but robbed of life, as if their souls were taken.

It is suspected that Moon Owls wield a variant of magic. However, the fact that survivors are unable to remember the encounter contradicts that suspicion. Survivors are able to recall the color of the moon owl's eyes, however.

From what is known about them, they are independent and avoid encounters.

A moon owl attacks by gliding silently just a few feet above its prey and plunging to strike when directly overhead.

Trivia[edit]

  • Most adventurers compare the moon owl with the reaper.
  • It is a common joke among the Camels that Salamat, the Tapiri goddess, is actually a moon owl; that the Tapiri are so ignorant that they only saw what they wanted to see in the creature: a goddess. It is an extension of this joke that the Tapiri are so mindless that the moon owl found no soul to take and instead, fled from them, which the Tapiri took as an act of godly acceptance/generosity.
  • The Cervids believe that the Moon Owl is the result of errant ley affecting their bodies and temperament.
  • Before Princess Luna's return, ponies used to think that Moon Owls reported to Nightmare Moon, as they only appear when the moon is full, which was when ponies could see the Mare in the Moon best.
  • During the day, it is impossible to find or distinguish Moon owls from regular owls. However, there has never been an attack during the day.
